This chart allows
Alaskans to look at our economic calamity in the context of international
economics. Notice how massive increases in the monetary base are failing to
increase bank lending.
The historical fact is that the 2008 derivatives devaluation traumatized
investors and left the balance sheets of corporations saddled with debt that is
slowly being paid down—while new productive investments remain flat.
The solution is leadership that identifies the root of the problem and asserts
the policies that restart productive investment.
The proposal to create the Alaska State Bank includes the policies necessary
for long-term economic development and addresses the structural problem of bank
lending. Budget cuts, Permanent Fund Dividend cuts and increasing personal
taxes are not long-term solutions.
